Cane Pole Crappies | Jason Mitchell Outdoors

Cane Pole Crappies

Cane pole crappies on Clear Lake, Iowa with guide Kevan Paul. Fun and effective way to target super shallow fish buried in large patches of pencil reeds. Great fishing opportunity for quality panfish.

The program is really simple. Twenty foot cane pole with about three feet of eight pound mono. Using Northland Fishing Tackle Firefly Jig tipped with a minnow. Dip the jig and minnow in every pocket in the reeds that you can reach around the boat.

Final note, these spring crappie can be vulnerable to abuse so please don’t abuse and practice selective harvest. Not much in fishing more nostalgic than a cane pole!
